“I honestly think she should give it another shot,” Celeste said.

Her voice ripped me from the recesses of my mind. “Give what another shot?”

Max groaned. “She’s been arguing for the past ten minutes on whether or not to let you dreamwalk the underworld again. Haven’t you been paying attention?”

I rolled my eyes. “Not since you guys started making decisions without me.”

Ayanna held her hand out toward me. “Told you guys. She hasn’t been absent this entire time, just fed up. We need to listen to what she wants.”

“She doesn’t know what she wants!” Max exclaimed.

I shot to my feet and spun to face him. “And how the hell do you know that!?”

The room fell silent as wind whipped through the tree leaves outside. Fall was quickly setting in, and the chill in the air was getting worse. Our cabins had more smoke plumes rising in the air than most, but if we wanted to stay concealed I needed to come up with a way to camouflage them away from the rest of the world.

Coop slowly got to his feet. “We just want what’s best for—”

I held up my hand. “I know you guys are trying to protect me. But right now, protecting me does no good if it gets in the way of my learning. The only way I’ll be able to control anything is if I get more experience with it. And that means exploring the veil, as well as stepping over it, multiple times.”

Everyone looked around at one another before Celeste stood. “So would you like Ayanna and myself to guide you through another walk across the veil?”

I drew in a deep, steadying breath. “Yes.”

“You know we’re going to be worried about you every step of the way, right?” Spencer asked.

I reached down and ruffled his hair. “I know, and I adore you guys for it. But that worry shouldn’t keep me from learning. Coop of all people should know that one.”

He nodded. “She’s right, as much as it makes me sick with worry to think about.”

I winked at him. “A nickname and an announcement of worry. I think I might be crawling underneath your fur after all, handsome.”

And his grin sent my heart thumping through the damn roof.

“All right,” Celeste said breathlessly, “then let’s go set up for another fun night.”

Then it hit me.

The address.

“A-a-actually… I think I need to spend tonight researching a bit with Coop.”

He furrowed his brow. “Why?”

I shrugged. “I found some things locked away in the recesses of my mind that I thought might help you out. And besides, Celeste and Ayanna need to work on building their strength so that, when the time comes, they can help keep me steady while I’m unleashing the undead on, well, more undead.”

Max scoffed. “Hey, I’m down with anything that keeps you alive and breathing.”

“Pretty quick change of pace there,” Ayanna said.

I peeked over at her. “Soon, we will venture out again. But not tonight. Tonight, Coop and I need to get some more research out of the way.
