âI honestly think she should give it another shot,â Celeste said.
Her voice ripped me from the recesses of my mind. âGive what another shot?â
Max groaned. âSheâs been arguing for the past ten minutes on whether or not to let you dreamwalk the underworld again. Havenât you been paying attention?â
I rolled my eyes. âNot since you guys started making decisions without me.â
Ayanna held her hand out toward me. âTold you guys. She hasnât been absent this entire time, just fed up. We need to listen to what she wants.â
âShe doesnât know what she wants!â Max exclaimed.
I shot to my feet and spun to face him. âAnd how the hell do you know that!?â
The room fell silent as wind whipped through the tree leaves outside. Fall was quickly setting in, and the chill in the air was getting worse. Our cabins had more smoke plumes rising in the air than most, but if we wanted to stay concealed I needed to come up with a way to camouflage them away from the rest of the world.
Coop slowly got to his feet. âWe just want whatâs best forââ
I held up my hand. âI know you guys are trying to protect me. But right now, protecting me does no good if it gets in the way of my learning. The only way Iâll be able to control anything is if I get more experience with it. And that means exploring the veil, as well as stepping over it, multiple times.â
Everyone looked around at one another before Celeste stood. âSo would you like Ayanna and myself to guide you through another walk across the veil?â
I drew in a deep, steadying breath. âYes.â
âYou know weâre going to be worried about you every step of the way, right?â Spencer asked.
I reached down and ruffled his hair. âI know, and I adore you guys for it. But that worry shouldnât keep me from learning. Coop of all people should know that one.â
He nodded. âSheâs right, as much as it makes me sick with worry to think about.â
I winked at him. âA nickname and an announcement of worry. I think I might be crawling underneath your fur after all, handsome.â
And his grin sent my heart thumping through the damn roof.
âAll right,â Celeste said breathlessly, âthen letâs go set up for another fun night.â
Then it hit me.
The address.
âA-a-actually⦠I think I need to spend tonight researching a bit with Coop.â
He furrowed his brow. âWhy?â
I shrugged. âI found some things locked away in the recesses of my mind that I thought might help you out. And besides, Celeste and Ayanna need to work on building their strength so that, when the time comes, they can help keep me steady while Iâm unleashing the undead on, well, more undead.â
Max scoffed. âHey, Iâm down with anything that keeps you alive and breathing.â
âPretty quick change of pace there,â Ayanna said.
I peeked over at her. âSoon, we will venture out again. But not tonight. Tonight, Coop and I need to get some more research out of the way.
